Well, Spring has finally arrived and we’re super busy around here.  Construction and landscaping are on-going.  So … how about an Ate’ story?  Whya was eating a little too quickly and started to choke on her food.  She was trying to cough it out but Ate’ heard her and he stopped eating, left his food, and went over to her (across the room) to see if she was okay.  Now that’s love!

Here she is …. Whya Wakan (Wolf Spirit) March 8, 2010

I’m proud to announce that we have another Dam that we’ll be adding to our breeding program. Her name is Whya Wakan. I’ll post a pic soon.  She likely won’t be bred until late 2011 or 2012 but she’s gorgeous!  Her litter mate will stand as a stud for Kata next year also.

We had the dogs out working them this weekend.  Every time we’re out with them people stop and comment about how beautiful they are, they want to know all about them, what breed they are, etc….  Of course I don’t mind talking about the at all :-) !!!  We were traveling one time and had the dogs with us and we stopped to grab a bite to eat.  David went in to get the food and my son and I were walking the dogs.  We could hear squeals from inside the restaurant about the dogs while we were walking them.  There was a lady going through the drive-thru picking up her food.  She drove over to where we were walking the dogs, told us how all the girls who worked in the restaurant were commenting about the dogs. She got out of her car, came over to us and wanted to know all about them.  We talked with her and she visited with the dogs for about 10 minutes… I’m sure her food got cold!  It doesn’t take an expert to see how special these dogs are.

So an update … I don’t think I’ve told you about Kata and Ate’ talking to each other.  Kata will have a bone or a toy and Ate comes over to “share” it.  She’ll start … hmm…. how I describe it … not a bark, not a whine, not a howl, sort of a chirp or a song… a cross between a bark, a howl, a whine.  She starts it then Ate’ joins in.  It sort of sounds like they’re arguing because they get really loud sometimes.  They make faces at each other, curling their noses … It’s hysterical.

I’ll try to post some updated photos soon.  In the meanwhile, if you’d like to know more about our dogs please visit us at http://www.sacredsongindiandogs.com.

So the final plans for the design of the new kennel building & facility have been finalized.  As soon as weather permits we’ll start building.  I’m excited because it will not only be a beautiful facility but it has been designed for optimum comfort and sanitary conditions for the dogs.   We will also be incorporating some dog play equipment like ladders, chutes, a digging area (where they are allowed to dig), a little pool, etc… so the animals are healthy and balanced both physically and mentally.

Ate’ accompanied us on a hike this weekend too!  There was 6 inches of snow that we were hiking in …. more like snow shoeing without the shoes…. he loved it!   His webbed feet just propelled him through the snow no problem.  He also, is another great hiking companion.   Very calm, confident, sensitive & aware of his surroundings, intuitively knew what I wanted him to do… I just couldn’t have asked more of him.   He’ll make a good musher too.    Kata went with me last weekend so she spent the day with David (which they both loved) and the little dogs.

Ista is training to mush and Ate’ and Kata will start soon.  Ista will be able to pull 250 lbs by next winter.  This spring & summer we’ll scooter (it’s an adult version with mountain bike wheels to use with dogs) in order to keep with our training routine.  It’s great exercise for me too (no you don’t just stand there and let the dogs pull you) because it uses your whole body.   I’ll need the work to prepare for the backpacking season.  Ate’ and Kata will be doing only ground work until next year.  Large breed dogs really can’t pull until they’re about 18 months old.  It’ll be a great way to keep Kata fit so her pregnancies and whelping will go easier and it will burn some sexual tension from Ate’.   Ista just plain loves doing it.  Once I’ve got them all trained, I’d love to get a couple of sulkies for David and I to mush the dogs when there’s no snow.

Ista is growing increasingly protective of our pack.  I need to work with him on it though because I think it’s getting a little out of balance.   I love that he is the guardian of the pack but I want him to remain balanced in the process.  He is also becoming quite the example to the other dogs…. if he sees them doing something they shouldn’t, he corrects them.  Mokie (you know him as the terrorist) on the other hand, will come and get me if he sees them doing something. He’s also a tattle-tale.

Kata is beginning to dig more than I’d like her to and in places I don’t want her to dig.  Not uncommon for Huskies to want to dig so I’ll need to channel it into a situation that is acceptable.  (Huskies will dig their dens in the snow/dirt to lie down in plus its an interactive activity so to speak.  As they dig, the dirt goes flying everywhere …. )   So, in the spring I’ll make sort of a sandbox/dirtbox place where they are allowed to dig.  That way, they can enjoy it yet it will be according to pack-leader’s (a/k/a ME) rules.

Have I mentioned that Ista is quite the tease?  His favorite game is taunting the other dogs into chasing him.  When the chase is on … he runs like there’s no tomorrow.  Ears flat against his head, body stretched out to cover as much ground as he can per stride.  Ocassionally looking over his shoulder to see who or how many are chasing him.  It was during one of these times over the weekend that the soccer ball finally bit the big one …. or should I say the big one finally bit the soccer ball.  They’d been playing pretty hard and rough with the ball.  Finally, Ista grabbed it from Ate’ and Kata and took off running… the soccer ball didn’t fare very well.   I don’t think I’ve seen three faces look like, “what are we going to do now???” when I took a toy away since my kids were little :-).  Of course it didn’t take long for them to discover one of the other kazillion toys around the kennel…

And…. today is Ate’ update.

If Ate’ had a human voice, I think he’d be a whistler.  He’s got what I call a Jimmy Buffett personality.  Laid back, easy-going, hanging out, no worries.   He’d definately wear flip flops, sunglasses, a bandana (he’s not the hat type), and hang at the beach.   Since he was very little he would come and sit in front you (not in a hurried puppy state of mind but just kind of stroll up to you, sit down) and look up at you like, “Whaat’s Uuupp?”.  He loves just being with us. He doesn’t care what we’re doing, he just wants to hang out.  If he wants our attention for any reason (usually he wants a tummy rub) and he doesn’t get it right away, he does this grunting sound …it’s hysterical.  Kata will whine (just a like a girl right?) but Ate’ will grunt.  If grunting doesn’t get him what he wants, then he howls..  He just makes me laugh all the time….

Today is a Kata update …

Her coat is turning a very rare calico coloring!!! As she grew, the red pattern had dark gray roots and began to turn dark gray.  It looked like she was going to look like her Sire.  Now, the dark gray has turned black tipped with red roots.  So she has a base color of white with red&black broken pattern.  For you women out there it looks like her red hair was heavily frosted with black.  You can clearly see both colors in her pattern.  Very, very cool and very rare!!! With her blue eyes and regal stance she is just a stunning dog!

How was I fortunate enough to get such rare and special coloring in both Kata and Ate’ for such a rare and exquisite breed?  Their pups will be exceptional looking and of course their temperaments couldn’t be better.  I’m really excited.
